VIRTUOSO 2020 – CLASSICAL MUSIC COMPETITION

This competition is open to instrumentalists of any nationality born between 1994 and 2014. The competition is strictly meant for amateurs. Full-time or part-time music-students are welcome as well.

DATES
The competition takes place on 25 and 26 of September 2020 at Alliance Française of Lusaka.
Participants have to accept the present rules and conditions, either online or physically at Alliance Française of Lusaka.
Deadline for registrations is Monday, 31 of August 2020.

INSTRUMENTS
For the 1st edition the following instruments in solo-rating can participate:
– Violin, Viola, Cello, Double-Bass
– Piano
– Clarinet, Flute (Accompaniment by piano or guitar is welcome and recommended)
– Ensembles from 2-5 members with any acoustic instruments .

All presentations have to be unplugged. Electrical amplification is not allowed.
Alliance Française of Lusaka provides a grand-piano. An accompanist is available on demand.

AGE – GROUPS OF THE PARTICIPANTS
Age group I: 6 – 9 years (2011-2014)
Age group II: 10 -13 years (2007-2010)
Age group III: 14 – 17 years (2003-2006)
Age group IV: 18 – 26 years (1994-2002)

REPERTOIRE
Each candidate shall present 2 short pieces of contrasting character (style or tempo).
One piece must be from the baroque or classical period (1650-1850).
The 2nd piece is at the candidate’s own choice and can be of any musical genre.
The total duration of each presentation for age groups I&II shall be between 3-8 minutes;
for age groups III&IV between 6-10 minutes.

JURY
The jury evaluates technical skills, musicality, stage presence and overall interpretation by the instrumentalist.
The jury’s decisions are final.
The jury will normally be composed by professionals of classical music with strong experience and knowledge on the subject:
• Theo Bross (Germany) Chairperson of the Jury
• Maxime Zecchini (France)
• Lauren Kitcat (Zimbabwe)
• Nchimunya Siachaba (Zambia)

PRIZES AND AWARDS
Every participant will receive a certificate.
Besides money prizes for age-groups III&IV, (age group I&II receive non cash awards with a similar value) there are vouchers, non-cash prizes and special awards by several institutions, embassies, enterprises and private individuals.
1st Prize winner 1000 Kwacha
2nd Prize 500 Kwacha
3rd Prize 250 Kwacha
1st and 2nd Prize winners have the chance to perform at the “Virtuoso Family Concert” on Sunday, 27 of September 2020 at the Foxdale Forest Clubhouse (Lusaka).

Certificates, awards and prizes will be handed out on Sunday, 27th September.

EVALUATION SCHEME
10-15 points – Participation with success
16-19 points – 3rd Prize
20-23 points – 2nd Prize
24-25 points – 1st Prize
